Utility Tech Apprentice Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

Under direct supervision, performs repairs of all water and wastewater infrastructure. This includes, but is not limited to, water mains, water services, water taps, fire hydrants, valves, sewer mains, sewer services, manholes, and clean outs.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Ability to follow written and oral directions

2. Ability to use/operate various hand and power tools used in the repair and maintenance of the water and wastewater systems

3. Under supervision, ability to perform preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.

4. Ability to work an “on-call schedule” as assigned to respond to after-hours emergencies.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Ability to safely operate heavy equipment which includes, but is not limited to, front end loader, tractor/backhoe, tandem axle dump truck.

2. Ability to positively represent the City of Arlington and the Water Department in all interactions with others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

• Ability to perform various physical movements including but not limited to carrying, crawling, dragging, lifting, bending, squatting, standing, twisting body, pulling, and/or pushing.

• Ability to work in an outdoor environment subject to dust and fumes. Exposure to electrical, mechanical, and/or explosive hazards is also common.

• Ability to work in inclement weather and extreme temperatures.

• Ability to lift or exert forces equivalent up to 90 lbs.

• Ability to work flexible hours as needed to respond to emergency situations.

• Ability to use a variety of hand held or power tools.

Qualifying Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED required.
